Dominion Energy | Norfolk, Virginia
Overview
The 30,000-square-foot Dominion Energy Monitoring and Coordination Center in Norfolk, Virginia, will be the home base for the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Project (CVOW). The wind farm it supports will be the largest in America, with 176 turbines off the coast of Virginia Beach, and is the first of its kind in the Mid-Atlantic region. The project is partly funded by a $39.2 million grant from the Department of Transportation.
This is Timberlab’s first project with MCA Architecture, located in Greenville, South Carolina, near Timberlab's SE Fabrication Facility. Balicore is the general contractor, and Britt, Peters, and Associates Inc. are the consulting engineers. The CLT for Dominion is from KLH, and the glulam is from Hasslacher, making this the first project with European wood to be fabricated by our SE team.
Dominion MCC’s coastal location subjects it to class D wind exposure, so when connection design was delegated to Timberlab, the team changed the originally specified connections to custom steel hangers designed to counteract wind uplift. That change and the pitched roof created many unique connection conditions that the Engineering and DCE teams handled with great attention to detail. This project saw exceptional collaboration between team members. Due to the number of unique connections, DCE and Engineering worked especially closely and held weekly meetings to focus on clash resolution.
